In autumn 2011 the Hungarian government decided to continue its struggle against the remaining of communism or things that may remind about it. After numerous renaming of the streets in Budapest and an attempt to remove the statue of liberty build during the communist times, the government decided to continue the fight with statues. This time its choice was made for the statue of a revolutionary proletariat poet of the 20th century, Attila József , who was a member of a communist party for a short time somewhere far away from the lawn near the Parliament building where it is now.

There were a couple of symbolic mainstream events against removal of the statue where people were holding speeches and listening for concert. We decided to make our own action - a picnic to commemorate Attila Jozséf. We like him because his life and worldview is unique and revolutionary. His poetry writing manner is full of provocation and grotesqueness, and his worldview is rebellious and anarchist.

On November 20 we took the food (mostly dumpster dived at the market on Saturday) we were cooking over the weekend and the FreeShop to the lawn with Attila Jozséf statue. There were some people there already, and during our stay there more people came. We were just hanging out, eating and sharing food, and also talking to the interested people who were passing by.

Budapest: Women Protest against Domestic Violence

25 November is an International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. On the next say, November 26, a number of feminist and women rights NGOs organized a demonstration to commemorate the victims of domestic violence in Hungary.
The demo started at 3 p.m. in Anker köz after the speeches and presentation of the current situation in Hungary with domestic violence. It was said that since the beginning of 2011, in Hungary 44 women have been murdered by their husbands. Major reasons behind these numbers are the outdated laws (in fact, there is no separate law in Hungary against violence against women), passivity and unwillingness of the government to deal with this problem, as well as inappropriate treatment of domestic violence by the police that considers it to be a private matter. Patriarchy, sexism and everyday male chauvinism are widespread in Hungarian society nowadays, and they are the main triggers of the widespread of domestic violence against women and lack of appropriate treatment of this issue by the state.
Ca. 100 participants of the demo were going from Anker köz to Ferenc Liszt tér through Andrassy ut. It was not the best route, as the street is just a big central avenue with lots of posh shops and cafes, and there were not many passers-by, whose attention the demo could attract. The demonstrators were holding various transparencies and 8 red women dummies to symbolize those who died from domestic violence. There was also a Samba band drumming during the demo. The Samba peopel were shouting the following slogans while walking together with the crowd:
Aki erőszakot lát emelje fel a szavát! (Who witnesses violence raise the voice!)
Az erőszak nem magánügy! (The violence is not privacy!)
Break the silence, stop the violence!
Overall, it was a nice demo on a topic that rarely gets any attention in the Hungarian society.

Evictions in the 14th District of Budapest

On October 18 local authorities of the 14th district of Budapest, Zugló, started evictions of the homeless. Until October 18 there existed several self constructed houses near the railway embankment at Francia St. and Egressy St. corner for almost 7 years. There were hiding behind the garages, so they even were not visible from the street. On Tuesday, though, the municipality started its action and demolished around 5 huts and left 9 homeless without a roof. On October 19 the authorities evicted other 7 people and destroyed their huts.
Some activists from A Város Mindenkié (The City for All) initiative and anarchists tried to prevent the destruction of the huts.

The eviction started around 9 in the morning. There were some police officers, public area supervisor and district inspector together with a group of public workers. First, the team of 17 poor public workers from the neighbourhood who are employed by the local government for ridiculously small money started moving mattresses and blankets of the homeless from one side of the street to another. Then they started to collect personal belongings of the homeless and piling them up at the edge of the street, as well as demolishing their huts. A group of activists tried to protect at least one hut. They occupied the hut to prevent its demolition. The police officers tore the door and told the activists to leave. After they refused to do so, the policemen called the colleagues that were about to arrest the activists. At the end, the police officers just took the data of the activists, nobody was arrested. Later on the representatives of the local authorities came to the activists and wrote their data too for unknown purposes. The local authorities, such as the mayor of Zugló, Ferenc Papcsák, deputy mayor of Zugló Attila Rozgonyi and the others.
Then, the local authorities were discussing the legality of the eviction of the huts with the A Város Mindenkié activists who were outside the hut. There were also some media present. The discussion took place during the time when the trash collecting truck was taking all the belongings of the homeless and destroying them in front of their eyes. The activists tried to save at least some books from the piles of the newly created "trash". The authorities did not provide any papers or arguments for the eviction, and they were mostly talking with their emotions, not facts. The eviction was illegal, as the legal process demanded at least two weeks of time to be started, but the local authorities did not want to wait, so that they started the eviction without any right to do so. The land where the huts were belongs to the state, and it is not clear which right the local authority has to it.
The inhabitants of the huts were just orally advised to move out from their habitat, and there was no written decision for this measure. From the point of view of A Város Mindenkié, the demkolition of hte huts was illegal, as the homeless have no right to appeal. The activist group plans to deliver this case to the legal proceedings on order to prevent such illegal actions in the future and to compensate the damage to the evicted homeless.
One of the arguments the local authorities provided was that the homeless should move to the shelters. In fact, the conditions in the homeless shelters in Budapest are really bad, there is no or little heating there, and the beds are full of bugs. Moreover, in the shelters the homeless are more inclined to become victims of violence or robbery. This is why the A Város Mindenkié activists asked the mayor of Zugló who is also a Member of Parliament to submit a paper demanding an adequate right to housing to become a law.

Hundreds demonstrated against the growing criminalization of homelessness in Budapest

On 17 October, The City is for All (AVM) held a major demonstration against a government proposal to impose a €500 fine or imprisonment on people who are found “residing in public places” twice over the course of 6 months. According to AVM, the proposal is unconstitutional and inhumane, since it punishes homeless people for not having appropriate housing.

The Secret is to Begin

Our goal is life. We are free to live it as we want. Nobody can judge us and tell us how to live. We are born free. We have freedom of choice.
Somehow we know all this, but we are not free. In the society we live in it is very hard to be free. You can be free without the society when you escape away from the civilization and live in the nature, cultivate your own self-sustainable garden and live alone or with a community. Live isolated from the society.
If you want to be free within the society, or you want to make the society free, you should believe in what you are doing, and in the power of change.
You are most probably not free. You may have a number of problems, and you may feel totally frustrated about them and injustice in this world. You can just sit there and accuse in your problems the state, the institutions, the society, the environment, bad ecology, family, world order and so on... You can temporary run away from the problems with help pf alcohol, drugs or random sex. You can even justify all of these by such words as "relaxation", "freedom" and "poliamory". This is just an illusion.
You can just chill out and tell everyone how cool you are because you wear political pins, go to punk concerts, live in a squat, and get drunk.
You do not work, you do not do wage labour because you do not want to be exploited and you hate capitalism. But you live with your friends, you do not participate in cost sharing for the flat, you do not cook, you do not clean, you never bring any food home, you hardly ever share anything with your frinds because you do not have anything to share, you use your friend"s laptop for youtubing for the whole day and say that you are busy with fighting capitalism. But you are simply exploiting your friends.
Or you live in a commune, stay away from exploitation by the capitalists and you do not have a wage labour to sustain it, but you charge your guests fixed price for being able to stay overnight.

If you are able to open your eyes and take you butt of the coach, then you may take your life in your hands and START LIVING and START CHANGING THE WORLD AROUND YOU. Just start doing anything you feel positive vibrations inside of you. Do not sit and wait until the world will change itself, it will not. By just sitting and observing you are flowing with the stream of the biomass, and you let others decide about your life and freedom, you let yourself being exploited. They are just overtaking decisions about your life, and at some point you will wake up to demand your freedom, but it can be too late.
Stop adopting to this changing world, let it adopt to you! Be yourself, start doing things, fewer words, more action, take an active side of the life. Start the change, first change yourself, and you will see how teh things around you also start changing, one by one, little by little, and later on the scale will grow, and you will see ho a drop of water creates bigger and bigger circles on the surface of a lake.

Start beliving in impossible, and just act as your heart tells you!

Police 'Welcomes' Austrian supporters of the 16th Budapest Pride

A bus with supporters of the Budapest Pride 2011 from Austria was detained by the police.
Two of the Austrian supporters were detained for ca. 6 hours.

The 16th Budapest Pride was a good 'temperature check' of nationalism and homophobia in the Hungarian society. The Parade itself took place on June 18, 2011 in Budapest, and this time it was an ambitious attempt to hold it without fences, on a longer route and without secure evacuation of teh Pride participants by metro after the end of the Pride.

Luckily, there were no any clashes between the Pride participants and the rigt-wing extremists during the Pride itself due to the police cordon. Unfortunately, the security measures after the Pride were not provided properly. This resulted into the clash between the Austrian supporters of the Pride and the Hungarian right-wing extremists. As ca. 50 supporters from Vienna were on their way from the Pride to the bus that was parked close to the end point of the Pride (close to the Parliament and a police station), they were attacked by 15 Hungarian neo-nazis. The latter were shouting homophobic and fascists slogans, pushing the Austrians and spraying some stinky substance at the Austrian group. As the police approached, the Austrian group was already inside the bus, while the Hungarian right-wing extremists were claiming that they were attacked by the Austrians. So, the police prevented the Austrian group from going, and detained the bus for ca. 2 hours. The police made all the Austrians who were in the bus already go out and give their documents. After the Austrians were presented one by one to the right-wing extremists, the latter identified two people by whome they were 'attacked', so the police detained these two representatives of the Austrian group for ca. 6 hours. They were released around 4-30 in the morning only. The Austrian ambassador, lawyers from TASZ and some supporters from Hungarian LGBT community were there to help to resolve this issue.

According to Gayboy.at, the two Austrians may face a trial because of the disruption of peace and public order. This accusation can become true becasue of the way the Pride route was fought in the court in February 2011. Back then, the authorities wanted to prohibit the Pride route until the Parliament due to traffic disruptions caused by the Pride. The organizers' appeal was successful though, so that the Pride could take its originally planned route.

Moreover, there is an information of APA (Austrian Press Agency) that the communications department of the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) shared that the two detainees were suspected in rioting.
Furthermore, according to Radicalqueer, this attack on LGBT Pride participants by the right-wing extremists was long planned beforehand. This source states that the police treated the Austrian group as suspects not only due to the accusations by the right-wing extremiss, but also due to intervention of Jobbik (right-wing party) representatives. Student Demo in Budapest

A student demonstration took place in Budapest, in front of the Corvinus university, on June 16, 2011.
First, it was planned as a ‘university occupation’, with the permission of the rector. Later on it turned out that it was not possible to get any permission, so the students of various universities just gathered in front of the Corvinus university to hold some speeches and transparencies, and after 1,5 hours of demonstrating everyone interested moved to the 'Kossuth Klub' nearby the Corvinus university to participate in the workshops.

Why was there any need for the demo?

* it's obvious, the government wants to do large reforms also in the education system, as in every area of the legalisation, state and social systems;
* we can presume the directions of this reform, according to the general political tendencies of this government;
* but there is no ready law plan or draft, just some blurred half-information became public through the media; for example: unifying or closing some universities, creating a new university about state administration, decreasing the quota of certain faculties, and increase it for others, introducing fees for studying at some faculties etc.;
* some suppose that this leaked information is to test the opinion of the people, and to measure the resistance;
* definitely they want to take out money from the education, actually 88 billion HUF, but this amount may increase;
* the Minister of education is from the conservative Christian democrate party, which is a semi-independent appendix of ‘Fidesz' (central-right wing party that holds the majority in Hungarian Parliament at the moment). The Minister offered her renunciation to the Prime Minister who obligated her to continue the reform;
* the educational reform was restarted already three times, because the new law drafts were not worked out enough, or they were too scandalous;
* the Ministry of Education is isolated in the government, they don't have support, they are even more conservative and more catholic than the big Fidesz party, and there is seriuos critics from the Fidesz party's educational politicians toward this catholic conservative group.

What happened?

* some students from the Corvinus university initiated some resistance and protest against the education politics of the government (they wanted to close the Corvinus university);
* other group from the same university gave proposals to the educational minister, about what do the students want to see in the reforms;
* there was a debate: proposals and communication with the government vs. protests and resistance;
* the minister answered, that any discussion between the students and government is useless, because there is the so called "national consultation" (the governing party used to send regulary a paper to all citizens, with that they can answer some stupid demagog
question...);
* 30 people from almost all universities created some organizing group, the "student network" (hallgatói hálózat);
* as it was the end of the semester, and the students were in the middle of the exams, the organizing group couldn't expect strong activity from the students (anyway the political activity of the students in Hungary in the last decades converges to zero);
* the organizing group decided to do a whole night forum with the students, with other cultural programs, music, etc. it would be in the building of the Corvinus university;
* the rector of the Corvinus university stated to the media that if the students resist against the educational reforms, he won't obstruct their actions;
* so the organizing group decided to announce the rector about its plans, and he agreed and welcomed the students to implement their plans;
* in the last two or three days before the political forum, the rector changed his mind, and decided to prohibit the student forum;
* finally the students made a demonstration outside of the university building, it was pretty good, with 200 participants (yes, in Hungary that's a good number). There were also three workshops held in another place, the "Kossuth Klub", a traditionally leftist place with some lecture halls. The workshops were about the educational politics of the recent times, the ideological background of possible actions and resistance, and generaly about the situation of the young generation (~18-28 y.o.). One of the workshop leaders was Miklós Tamás Gáspár, a leftist philosopher and scholar who participated in the anarchist movement in Hungary in 60’s and 70’s.;
* the organizing group knows that September is much better for involving students into political activity, and now, in June, it was just a start of this "brand", and the organizing group wants to continue... Btw, this name ("student network") is not new, it's borrowed from a very similar group in 2006 that also wanted to organize student plenum in the university, and the rector closed completely the buildings for two days because of their intentions.

Public action / Demonstration:

Location: Kossuth square, in front of the Museum of Ethnography, near the Kossuth statue (grassy area)

The 5th European Roma Platform will be held in Budapest, in the Museum of Ethnography, two days after the European Commission has released its Communication entitled “10 years to make a difference: An EU Framework for National Roma Integration Strategies by 2020”.

We, Roma and pro-Roma NGOs and activists, will gather in front of the Museum of Ethnography to remind EU and Member States' politicians that in order to make a real difference in the lives of Roma they need to address all forms of anti-Roma discrimination and racism. Whilst the details of the framework are being debated, some Roma fear for their lives in their own home, because some member states are not able to provide them adequate protection against racist harassment and attacks. Our aim is to highlight that anti-Gypsyism and discrimination pose the main obstacles to Roma inclusion.

On April 2, two different groups of people went to a small village Hejőszalonta (near Miskolc, ca. 160 km east from Budapest). The first one went there to make a “Demonstration against Gypsy Terror”. This group of people mostly dressed in black Hungarian Guard uniform consisted from right-wing representatives of Hungarian society including far right Jobbik party representatives. A lot of local people from Hejőszalonta joined them. The second group consisted of Roma rights activists, anti-racists and other civilians, a big part of whom were foreigners, who are willing to stand up against neo-nazi terror spreading out in the country. There were also the representatives of Amnesty International and TASZ.

The right-wing group registered a commemoration walk with candles in order to commemorate the recently murdered woman who was a victim of a Gypsy crime according to Jobbik. This woman was murdered on March 6 by her tenant who was living at her place for about a week. The murderer turned out to be a Gypsy. He is said to be caught by the police already. So, this murder was a good opportunity for the far right to burn another village with hatred towards Roma people, so they decided to make a demonstration in Hejőszalonta. Anti-racist civilians and Roma rights activists from Budapest decided to prevent the far right from marching and harrasing the local Roma community and to protect the latter, so they also decided to make a peaceful people's chain in Hejőszalonta. As Jobbik registered their march earlier, it was impossible to register a counter demo, a people's chain in the same place, so at the end the situation turned out to be as follows: the anti-racist civilians together with the local Roma people had an opportunity to make a peaceful demo in a different place divided from the far right demo buy the police cordon.

Around 100 anti-racist activists went to Hejőszalonta from Budapest. We arrived there shortly after 5. At the entrance of the village the police was checking everyone's IDs and asking to which demo people were going in order to direct cars of the far right and anti-racists to different directions in order to provide security. So, the whole village (at the entrance you can see the board telling that this is a EUROPEAN VILLAGE - how pathetic - a far-right march in an EUROPEAN village in 2011, are we coming back to WW II times?) was flooded by the police. As we arrived to the place where the anti-racist demo was registered, it was pretty overcrowded by the activists, media and some local Roma people. All together there were around 200 persons there.

It turned out that the people's chain is impossible to form in order to prevent the far right from marching, so the people were just standing there, having some speeches and listening to the music. The activists were talking to the locals, sharing some food they brought, making transparencies and just walking around the limited space. Among the speakers there were some Romani activists who made inspiring speeches about situation with far right in Hungary, racism and Roma.

The mayor of the village Joseph Anderkó held a neutral speech that condemned the crime in general, and he also stated that Gypsies and non-Gypsy inhabitants of the village are at peace. Unfortunately, this is not true any more. Later on we talked to some local Gypsy families, and they told that before there were no major problems among Gypsy and non-Gypsy population, but the far-right demo "against Gypsy crime" put the start to the greater division, as a lot of locals joined it. A Roma woman told that her best friend (non-Roma friend) is taking part in the far-right march on the other side of the fence.

Around 8 the far-right march approached the peaceful anti-racist demo. To understand the situation better, it is important to know that the far-right people with torches and Jobbik and Arpad flags were marching in the streets of Hejőszalonta from ca. 5 until 9-30 with the culmination at the house of the murdered woman. Their route was perpendicular to the street where the anti-racist demo took place. So, we could see the far-right chain of people coming from the right. As they approached the place where the anti-racist demo was, they started shouting some anti-Roma slogans, and the demonstrators on the other side were shouting "Nazi go Home" (as it was also written on one of the banners).

Among the far-right marchers we could see a lot of representatives of the Hungarian guard, as well as local people including old ladies and small kids. As the anti-Roma chain went away, people were still staying for a while until 9-30, and then the activists went home to Budapest, and the local Roma went to their homes.

There was no violence, everything went pretty peaceful, but at the same time this evening revealed who is who in the village, as it was the first event of this kind there. Now it is up to the local community to deal with the co-existence of Roma and non-Roma people in the village.

A “Demonstration against Gypsy Terror” will be held on Saturday evening at 6, in Hejőszalonta, with the participation of far right Jobbik MPs. The town is about 160kms east of Budapest.
The local Roma are asking us to join them and form a HUMAN CHAIN around the Roma neighborhood of the town to protect those living there.
A woman was recently murdered in Hejőszalonta and far right Jobbik MPs published a statement that she was a victim of gypsy crime. They have called on people to join them if they want to put an end to gypsy terror. The speakers will include 3 Jobbik MPs and other Jobbik politicians.
Join us in forming a human shield! We are meeting at Blaha Lujza Tér at 3pm. The police will be informed that we are going.

March 20: a Visit to Gyöngyöspata

On March 20 15 activists visited Gyöngyöspata in order to support local Roma community that was suffering from neo-nazi terror in the past weeks.

Due to the terror against the Roma people the Magyar Gárda created in the past weeks in Gyöngyöspata the local Roma were suffering a lot, and they really needed protection and support. As some activists were going there in the last week to provide this support and protect the local gypsies from the Gárda, the situation was getting more and more attention from the media and NGOs, and after all we have heard that the Gárda has left the town. But still the local Roma asked the activists to come there just in case and provide them with support in case the gárda comes back. Moreover, the locals had to spend money on leaving the town, and they could not always buy food as the Gárda was patrolling the shops, moreover, the local Roma community was also accomodating and giving food to all the activists who came to support them during the past two weeks. So, the activists decided to go there and bring some food on March 20 to ca. 450 people from the Roma community that constituted 115 families.

The activists agreed to meet at Blaha square in Budapest at noon and go to Gyöngyöspata by cars. Some people just came there to bring food and give it to those going to Gyöngyöspata. There were only 4 cars that could accommodate 15 people and all the food. There were various activists at Blaha, both Hungarian and foreign, as well some representatives of Amnesty International Hungary. The activists also decided to cook some food in Gyöngyöspata, therefore the first destination point was TESCO in Gyöngyös. At around 12-30 the cars started going to Gyöngyös.

As we arrived to TESCO, we decided to cook a dinner (paprikas krumpli - potatoes with paprika) together with one of the biggest Roma family (its member is also a representative of the Roma community to a local government) of Göngyöspata. We did not have resources to cook for the whole community (450 people), so we decided to cook only for this 15 member family. After we bought all the ingridients for the meal and also some packs of flower, sugar and cans we started going to Gyöngyöspata. On the way we saw a bunch of nationalist bikers hanging out next to TESCO.

As we arrived to Gyöngyöspata, around 100 people from the Roma community were waiting for us in the streets, most of them were kids. Everyone was really glad to see us, and they just surrounded us and started talking about the situation and how glad they were that we came there. A lot of kids were really open and interested in everyone, they were also curious if we brought some chocolate. The most of the activists brought the food to the house of the family of the local Roma representative and then together with his family started distributing the packages for the Roma families.

were distributed among the Roma community in Gyöngyöspata!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The 115 families received 1 food pack each - we tried to distribute the food fairly.

Later on the people started cooking the dinner. Meanwhile, I went with a couple of activists to discover the situation in the town and to talk with the Roma families and kids. Most of all I was interested to see what is going on with the gárda and the police, as on the way we saw 7 people (as it turned out later, they are from Gyöngyös) dressed in black with some white and red striped triangle (white and red stripes constitute so-called Árpad flag, a symbol of Hungarian neo-nazi) on their backs and with "polgárőrség" (civil guard) words at a shop. On hte way to the shop there was a police car, and the local police checked our documents.

As there was nobody at the shop, I and 2 other activists went back together with some kids, and as we returned to the street where more Roma houses are, we saw that the police car was still there, on the crossing of two streets. After a while we saw a raw of the nationalist bikers (around 20-30) going on the street perpendicular to the one leading to the Roma settlement (it is segregated, surprise-surprise!) followed by a police mini-van. After that I was hanging out with local kids and then one family invited me for a cup of tea, and we talked about the situation and how they were feeling in the last days. Overall, they told that the gárda people were marching and patrolling the town every day, mostly harassing children at a school and in the kindergarten, so some 3-year-old kids got totally terrified, and they started having serious psychological problems because of the gárda, e.g., peeing themselves. Moreover, a woman told that the gárda were wearing black masks and standing next to the shops, so they looked like some robbers. But the main aim of the gárda was not to rob a shop, but to prevent Roma people from going there. Moreover, the family told me about the hard situation there, as it is quite hard to sustain the family due to social discrimination, e.g., it is almost impossible to find a job if you are a gypsy. A woman told that she had to work for 30.000 HUF a month at some hard job that mostly men do, and still she was harassed there. We also talked about the attitude of the police that seems to be against the Roma people in Gyöngyöspata.

We could have talked further, but then we saw the local 'gárda' marching in the street and then stopping in front of the house. So, the family went out to ask them what they were doing, and also to call the police that was nearby. So, I have got an opportunity to talk to the police about the situation. I managed to talk top 3 policemen, and all of them gave me more or less response.

One policeman told that the people in black are just civil guards appointed by the non-Roma citizens of the town in order to patrol the town due to the increased number of crimes. These people in black are not neo-nazis and they are not harassing anyone, they are just walking to keep the order in the town. Another one told that the people in black are just patrolling the town due to the increased crime level, and in order to understand why the local civil guards are in the town I need to live in Gyöngyöspata for a week and then make a conclusion myself if there is a need for them or not. Moreover, he told that these guys are not harassing anyone based on ethnicity. The third one told that he comes from Budapest just to check the situation in the town, so he does not know much. When I asked him why the people in black march in the town, and if they have the same attitude towards Roma and non-Roma people, e.g., if they harass both Roma and non-Roma kids, he told that there is not difference between the treatment of Roma and non-Roma people, and the guards are just watching the public order.

After this I went to the house where the dinner was cooked and spent the rest of the evening with the family and other activists. We talked further about life in Gyöngyöspata, and I also had a nice walk with two girl around the neighbourhood. On the way we met a girl who is 20 year old and has 3 kids, and she told how hard her situation is and she asked for some support in form of money or kids clothes. So, more support for the Roma community would really helpful, because the problem is not just in the terror of the Roma minority by the gárda, but also social segregation.

We went back to Budapest around 8 p.m., but the local Roma citizens cordially invited us to come back!

Recent Earthquakes in Japan that caused numerous disasters, the most striking one is Chernobyl #2. It happened quite close in time to the 15th anniversary of the Chernobyl catastrophe... There were several explosions at Fukushima nuclear plant, the first one happened on the 12th March, the 2nd was observed on the 14th of March. Surprise-surprise, but the scenario repeats itself in a way that there is almost no information about real situation with the nuclear plant and most of the facts are being kept secret.

A gigantic earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Japan on 11 March. Thousands of people were buried under buildings or died in the flooding. In many of Japan's more than 50 nuclear reactors cooling systems broke down. This caused several hydrogen explosions and at least partial fuel rod meltdowns in the reactor blocks one to three of the Fukushima Daiichi nuke. Around the globe the high-risk technology and its future are being protested against and debated . Switzerland is putting a moratorium on construction of new nuclear power plants. In neighbouring Germany the Neckarwestheim nuke will be closed down permanently and seven other old ones temporarily. On Monday 14 March more than 110,000 people demonstrated against nuclear power in more than 450 towns across Germany. Update 15.03. 14:30: In the cooling basin of Block IV fire broke out, radioactivity got into the atmosphere. High radiation levels are measured, personnel were evacuated from the control room. Cooling in Blocks V and VI is not working properly.

So, the country is in a big tragedy now...

Roma neighborhood under control of uniformed vigilantes in Hungary

Budapest, 16 March 2011

According to the local representative of the Jobbik party in the Heves County village, crimes against property have become unbearable to the locals, who have therefore called the Civil Guard Association for a Better Future to protect them. Gábor Vona, the president of Jobbik said in Gyöngyöspata[1] that „those are not willing to integrate should leave the country.” More than 2,000 members and sympathizers of Jobbik and the Civil Guard Association for a Better Future held a protest in the village, which counts 2,500 citizens, against „Gypsy terror”, fearing that „crimes committed by the minorities could create a civil war situation.”

The Roma were astonished. According to them, generalizing and exercising arbitrary control over the whole village because of a few trouble makers is not a solution. Nearly 2,500 persons marched in black military-like clothing on 6th March 2011 in Gyöngyöspata, after the rally supported by the Jobbik party, through the village’s Roma neighborhood, chanting slogans about the restoration of public safety. The police arrived on the scene on the day of the demonstration but did not interfere in any way, regardless of the “abuse caused to the rights of the local Roma residents, which could have been a ground for the authorities to break up the protest”, as mentioned in the letter written by the members of Gyöngyöspata’s Roma community to the Hungarian Minister of Home Affairs.

After the end of the protest the activists wearing the black uniforms of the Civil Guard Association for a Better Future, the “Defense Guard” or the “gendarmerie” did not leave Gyöngyöspata. They are there to this day and still terrorize the local Roma population. They stand in lines and surround the neighborhood. Because of their threatening appearance, the Roma do not dare leave their houses or send their children to school. Their stated goals and behavior clearly questions the state monopoly on the legitimate use of force. The village has a local police chief who had earlier initiated investigations into some thefts and closed some cases. However, many local residents considered it necessary to strengthen public safety by calling on the civil guards to protect their village. While the police doubled their presence on the scene two days after the protest, the members of the Civil Guard Association for a Better Future and its sympathizers are still forming a human chain around the houses of Roma residents and say they are there to stay. The police, while present in large numbers, still do not interfere in any way, regardless of the fact that there is reasonable suspicion that offenses such as harassment and bodily injury are occurring on a day to day basis against many of the village’s Roma residents. Some of the protesters have vowed to stay on and guard the village until the local Roma self-government does not sign a declaration stating that the Roma will stop committing crimes. Attila Laszlo, the leader of the Civil Guard Association for a Better Future said that he had heard about the municipality requesting that the Civil Guard should leave but that this was later retracted by the mayor. The mayor’s office confirmed his statement. According to their initial plans, they intend to stay until they train and organize a local branch of the organization made up of local residents.

Attila Laszlo added that during the night, his guards had once again helped capture two wood thieves in the surroundings of the village. As they caught the thief red-handed, they called the local police, who initiated proceedings. Food is regularly being collected and accommodation offered to the civil guards by local residents.

László Tabi, the independent mayor of Gyöngyöspata told the press on 9th March that the civil guards had since been actively involved in capturing wood thieves. Simultaneously, local residents continued to offer accommodation and food to their “guests” and initiated a petition to demand that the Civil Guard stay on.

Jobbik representative András Kisgergely reminded his followers that “Gypsies attack Hungarians each and every day. Typically, the gypsy carries a knife, and after having committed a theft and met with resistance, he starts his killing spree. It is not enough for him to hurt the one who resists, it is his life he wants to take!” According to the politican, “gypsy criminals are left free to maraud in villages, terrorize and murder the Hungarians while they are protected through every means possible and their acts are left out of the public eye.”

One article in major ultra-nationalist website, www.barikad.hu, begins with the statement that in Gyöngyöspata, on the day of the protest, the population had once again approached the ideal Hungarian “ethnic ratio”, a concept which, with demographic decline among non-Roma and high birth rates among Roma in Hungary, is gaining in importance in the ultra-nationalist narrative in Hungary. Gábor Vona, president of the Jobbik party, said that he had received information from different sources that the local Roma had been threatening the “Hungarian” residents in Gyöngyöspata, promising that revenge would be taken after the civil guards left the village. The politician promised that: “if need be, twice, three times as many civil guards will come back.” Mr. Vona added that they would organize the civil guard movement across the country’s cities and villages.

“We went to Gyöngyöspata on Thursday, 10th March, and found we had to cross two checkpoints reminiscent of war movies to enter the Roma neighborhood.” wrote the www.sosinet.hu website. At that point tension was intense between the Roma and the people clad in black uniforms surrounding them. “During our interviews, local Roma inhabitants told us about the psychological terror and humiliation they are suffering, the constant fear they are feeling. It is not safe for them to leave their homes, even to go to work.” In their declaration, the local Rona draw attention to the fact that the members of the Hungarian Guard hidden behind “Civil Guard Association for a Better Future” and “gendarme” uniforms and openly supported by the Jobbik party have kept the Roma residents of the village in a state of constant fear for the past two weeks. The situation has come to a point where the Roma are terrified to leave their houses, stopped sending their children to school and do not even feel secure inside their own homes.

Activists began organizing a crowd to “celebrate” the 15 March National Holiday in Gyöngyöspata. Between 230-250 people arrived to the village in the morning and spent the day in the Roma neighborhood to celebrate Hungary’s commemoration of its revolution against Austrian rule in 1848. They walked together to the Kossuth (a hero of the revolution) statue, claiming in statement signed by spokespersons Tamás Bauer, László Márton and Iván Vitányi that “laws apply to all, not only to those who commit crimes against other persons’ property. They also apply to those self-appointed militia members who keep others in a state of terror.” Today is 16 March, a day after the National Holiday. A few people were taken to the police station yesterday in Gyöngyöspata because they could not show their ID’s.

“The police, the legitimate guardians of public safety, have been watching on silently as an aggressive organization bulldozes through the basic norms of any democratic state based on the rule of law and attacks members of the Roma minority arbitrarily instead of preventing this state of affairs from developing from the day it started.” - says the Hungarian Democratic Charta in their statement.

The Hungarian Democratic Charta and the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (TASZ), two NGOs, have expressed their shock at the lack of response of the Hungarian authorities: “We are shocked by the inaction of the police, which could encourage others to take similar actions and could deepen the loss of trust of the Roma minority in the authorities and the administration.” While many representatives of European governments and journalists from all over the world are currently in Hungary for the EU Presidency summits, neither the events, nor their statement have made it into the international press.

The question is whether Hungary, which is currently holding the European Union Presidency, will acknowledge that vigilantism, the concept of demographic “ ethnic ratio” and the meaning given to Hungarian national values by those who claim to protect this country and their sympathizers is a direct path back to where Hungary stood in the 1930s, and whether this government will finally take real steps to stand by its stated principles and stop militias advocating crimes against humanity from taking our country over once again.

“After Gyöngyöspata”, the Jobbik party has asked the members of the Civil Guard Association for a Better Future “to take the restoration of public safety into their own hands in Borsodnánasd also.”

We urge all to unite against the recent racist trend!

The Hungarian Guard is a Hungarian ultra-nationalist movement supported by the ultra-nationalist Jobbik party, which won 16 % of the national vote in the 2010 general elections. The Guard was banned in July 2009 by a Budapest court. Judge Pataki, in charge of the case, decided that the Hungarian Guard's main aim is to spread fear among Roma and noted that the Guard is also anti-Semitic because in a speech a spokesman of the Guard talked about “Zionist rats, locusts, and grave diggers of the nation.” The judge pointed out that all these activities are unconstitutional and not in conformity with Hungary's international obligations. The Civil Guard Association for a Better Future was founded in 2010 and has been trying ever since to join the National Federation of Civil Guards to legitimize its activities. These attempts have been met with the Federation’s refusal to cooperate. Most Hungarians acknowledge that due to the support of Jobbik and to the similarity of the organization’s stated objectives and the methods used and black uniforms of its members, the Civil Guard Association for a Better Future is the successor of the banned Hungarian Guard.

Dumpser Diving Demo

The demo against the law that prohibits dumpster diving in the 8th district of Budapest took place on 10 March at 5 p.m. in the 8th district of Budapest. There were around 100 people at the demo. The event started with Rhythms of Resistance drumming, followed by the speeches. After that people started the action - around 20 people went to the nearby trash bins and started dumpster diving in front of the police. First, the police did not make any action against the people who were dumpstering, so one of the organizers asked the people to dumpster actively. The people of the local government asked the police to arrest them. Overall, 9 people were arrested. One of them, the organizer who asked the people to dumpster was brought to the police station because of 'agitation to dumpster', and the rest were brought to the local government office.

After the arrests, a spontaneous march started from the location of the demo to the police station with drumming and shouting "a szegények nem bűnözők" (the poor are not criminals), "a város mindenkié" (the city is for all). Some people in the street liked this march and joined the spontaneous march. When the people arrived to the police station, the police told the people to stop drumming, shouting and showing banners as this is an illegal action, and if the people continue on doing the things they were doing before, the police has the right to arrest everyone. So, the demonstrators were just standing on the opposite side of the police station waiting for the police to release the arrested organizer. As it started to be boring, some of the people started dancing and making smaller performances. E.g., one girl who was dressed as a bride went to the policemen with another girl in order to ask them if they want to marry her. The police told they liked her, but just on the other side of the road. So, then the people started marching with an anarchist flag, after that the people started performance with clowns and police. After a while the police gave the people the permission to make a demonstration.
So, the Rhythms of Resistance started drumming, but it did not last long, as the local inhabitants complained because the disturbance. Around 11 p.m. the police released the arrested organizer. The other 8 people arrested for dumpster diving had been released earlier, and they were in the building of local government.

Freedom to Dumpster Divers in Budapest!

Local municipality of the 8th district of Budapest criminalizes poverty by prohibiting dumpster diving in that district. This is one of the poorest districts of Budapest (it is close to the centre of the city) where mostly poor families, homeless, Roma and Asian immigrants live. So, the law that prohibits dumpster diving in the 8th district is clearly directed against the poor. The law aims at satisfying interests of the middle class and rich tourists that should not see 'ugly' face of poverty. The law restricts and excludes the poor and homeless from the city centre. It also serves the rich and capitalism as it prohibits recycling and encourages BUYING and CONSUMING of the STUFF. The social workers of Budapest are organizing a demonstration against this law, please, find the CALL below:

If we do not see poverty it does not mean it does not exist!

On the 1st of January 2011 dumpster diving was prohibited in the 8th district (Józsefváros) of Budapest: if you take trash in this district you are oblliged to pay the fine of 50.000 HUF (ca. 185 euro). We, social workers, condemn this regulation which criminalizes poverty, attacks the defenseless, and sweeps the problems under the carpet. It is clear to everyone that poverty forces people in need to dumpster dive. The Municipality of Józsefváros and the mayor of this district are does not care about the poor, instead, they want to please the middle class that SHOULD NOT SEE POVERTY or HEAR ABOUT IT. If we do not see poverty it does not mean it does not exist.By this law the local government increases oppression against vulnerable groups, and official harassment makes existance of such groups even more impossible. Moreover, it also violates even standards of people's behaviour: what is no longer needed, should be thrown away rather than reused by somebody else. In reality, should this be announced to the inhabitants of the 8th district who are mostly homeless, poor families and pensioners?

8 March Demonstration for Women's Liberation in Budapest!!!

* A small girl tries on high-heeled shoes pretending that she is an adult; to become an adult means to get a gender role.
The 10-year-old, 6 years old or even younger children will produce tiny men and women with help of clothes and toys through, and they are expected to have "girlish" and "boyish" behaviour.

* The girls are usually raised to be as beautiful as it is shown in the media, even if these beauty standards hurt it, even if it takes a lot of time, energy and money to correspond to these standards. If you are a girl or a woman and your legs or arm-pits are not shaved, you will be humiliated, suspected and ridiculed. The cosmetics ads about washing powder and other detergents usually show women who are doing housework, as it is a woman's job to wash and to clean. In contrast, men are usually depicted in the adverts in large cars trying to sell beer and electrical gadgets which usually "do not come together" with an image of a typical women in the society.

* Contemporary teenagers follow the trends they can hear from the pop songs that depict women as servants of men's sexual desires. Such songs and videos are the most popular on YouTube. It seems that everyone accepts this, or maybe people do not even notice that something MUST be wrong with these songs. Isn't it good for everyone just to accept the thought that there are biological differences between men and women that determine the type of behaviour depicted in the pop songs? Isn't it good for women to do what the men expect them to do sexually just because this is "determined by nature"???

* Whenever a women gets the first life opportunity to get into serious relationship with a man, she follows the image of the system and the society: she compromises her dreams and plans by silent obeying to a man's orders and wishes just for the sake of saving a relationship. A single a women in contemporary progressive society is still perceived as a loser.

* The family, the school, but most of all the media tell a woman (who is believed to live longer and to have better health then a man just because by nature a woman has 2 XX chromosomes) to be a servant to an "endangered" man (who has just one X chromosome and one "rare" Y chromosome). If a woman starts the game called "life" she will anyway lose it if she wants some autonomy, as this means to break the rules. Of course, a woman can keep the rules and play the game according to the expectationns of the society which is good for the system, but how good is it for a woman? A clever woman who stands up for her interests and against the patriarchal and sexist system usually is immediately called "a hysterical bitch".

* Currently (2011) 351 males and only 35 females have sits, and the women have to read anti-women bills, and this is their typical task. If a woman and a man have the same job, in average, a woman gets 13% less money than a men. Women engaged in health and legal activities get 25 - 30% lower wages then men, while shop assistants, bank clerks, accountants and consultants get up to 40 - 50% lower wage respectively in the work they are mostly forced to do! This is what companies like nowadays: the job is the same, but you get less money just because you are a woman!

* Have you thought why it is so hard for you as a woman to achieve some goals men can get easily? Why do you have to prove all the time that you are an equal human being who can be perceived seriously without ridiculing by men who see more than a speaking doll in you? Why are your wishes, thoughts and 'logic' of a lower order than men's?

* Why is it better for a woman to be married with an alcoholic man who verbally and physically harasses her every day? Just because without a man she is nobody in this society? Is it safer to have a 'family' with such a man than being single?

* Why a woman should give more care and love to a husband and not to a new born baby? Why a woman is not afraid to lose love of her baby, but she should do her best not lose her 'man' right after the birth of a child?

* Why men always find reasons not to help by household or they just cannot do anything without a woman telling them what to do? In this way the woman is forced to take on the function of “dispatcher,” to organize, distribute and assign tasks for the other “helpers,” through which she her overburdening increases again.

Today, on the 8th of March, most men give you flowers and gifts, and tomorrow they will continue the oppression of women in the same way as before. How do you see the situation? Talk to other women about it, or - if you would like - write to us. Ask for help from others, and help those who live in oppression!

2011. The last “crisis” to date is in its third year. In Europe, the financial and banking systems crisis has become a crisis for States. Having thrown millions at the banks and big business, governments say they
can no longer take on their debts and they organise, with the help of international institutions (IMF, European Bank), austerity plans: cuts to salaries, social welfare and pensions, massive redundancies, privatisation of public services, destruction of social rights… If rebellious movements develop in many more countries like in Greece, Romania, UK, Italy, France, the politics of social rupture have not stopped and are starting to produce their effects. Exploitation and growing inequalities, repression
of migrants and the development of techniques of control, gentrification and ghettoization accompany well-oiled capitalist media propaganda and formidable security policies aimed at maintaining the status-quo and avoiding outbursts.

On a global level, the planet suffers from all kinds of pollution, hunger and thirst concern millions of human beings, wars endure but international institutions and multinational corporations are having a party. Millions suffer whilst their power continues unhindered. These institutions get away with anything under the pretext of “handling the crisis”, and this, without leading to coordinated resistances. It is in this context that the ‘powers-that-be’ are about to come together in Deauville (G8, 26/27 May) and in Cannes (G20 in November).

Antifascist Demo in Budapest

The Hungarian Neo-Nazis organized a demonstration on 12h of February, so-called Day of Honor 2011: in the capital of Hungary, Budapest. They had a demo in the Northern part of the city far away from the centre.

Antifascists of Budapest planned to organize a counter demo, but as the place of the neo-nazi demo was not announced in advance, but one hour before the demo start, the antifa demo was agreed to be held in the centre of Budapest. Unfortunately, the neo-nazi demo was to far away to block it, but the antifa demo in the centre had its advantage, namely that more people can see an antifa demo, as there are more people in the centre.

WHY ANTIFA DEMO?
Antifascist struggle, inherently tied with struggle against all the other sorts of social oppression and exploitation, is of outmost importance. The fight against fascism will have no future if it is not closely tied to the struggles of workers, migrants, students for dignity and liberation. To change something we need to change everything.The people who stand up against fascism and racism want to show that we are united and can combat them together!

WHERE?
The antifa demo was held in a form of march from metro "Astoria" to metro "Blaha Lujza ter" on 12 February.

WHAT?
A group of ca. 100 people gathered at Astoria around 4 p.m. There were different people - from young grass root antifa movement and anti-racist activists - to older generation of antifa supporters. The people had various transparencies with messages about neo-nazi movement and it's potential danger for the society to such words as "There are no winners in a war". The demo started with samba drumming, then there were some speeches about the need to held this demo and the way of resistance against neo-nazi movement. Then the demonstrators started going towards Blaha with samba drummers playing revolutionary rhythms. After the group reached the final destination, further speeches were held, and final remarks were made. The final of the demo was drummed with samba rhythms.

Transnational Migrant Strike
On 1 March all over the world migrants stand up and organise against social exclusion, discrimination and racism. The movement started with a migrants’ strike and boycott day in the USA in 2006. Since then protests spread transnationally to different parts of the world. This year as well, employees working in the world’s richest countries will walk-out on work, take direct industrial action or practice other forms of protest. In Austria, we want to create the foundation for a broad movement to initiate a radical change in policy towards migrants.

We have come as workers, as students and professors, as refugees, relatives, physicians and sex workers, as undocumented migrants, as au pairs, professionals and care workers. We have been living here for years and sometimes for generations. We are here, in kindergartens, in schools, hospitals, and nursing homes, on construction and production sites, at universities, in private homes, in brothels, super markets and offices. We have all genders and sexual orientations, we believe in different religions and ideologies, we belong to different age groups and social strata. We have diverse backgrounds, sometimes we stick to our ethnic origin, sometimes we renounce these forms of belonging. We are living here and there. We are not longing for an old or for a new homeland. Frontiers are too narrow for us. We do not fit into them, they don’t fit our lives.

We are fighting against everyday racism and harassment, against poor pay, against wiped out opportunities and dead end careers for ourselves and our children. We are standing up against a discriminatory education and welfare system, the incompetence of political parties and police brutality. We are fighting against being deprived of citizens’ and social rights - a strategy to make us available and exploitable as cheap labour.

We are fed up with racist responses. We are here to stay. Instead of waiting we are now taking our destinies into our own hands. We have fought many battles; we know what it means to be excluded. We are living solidarity and we want radical change.
Wherever we are living and working, we all are entitled to equal rights, and to good and just living conditions!

1 March will be a day of mobilisation, irritation, raising voices and strike. We invite everybody regardless and transgressing identities and ethnicities to join this protest and to strike against racism. Let’s use this day to join our differences to find a new common new language. We put an end to the division between We and You. We all are the future!

Audimax of the University Wien is Occupied!!!

Following general assemblies at universities across Austria about 20,000 people joined protests linked to the "Global Wave of Action for Education" in various cities! 15,000 of them in the capital Vienna alone.

Following the demonstration close to 1,000 students stormed the largest lecture hall and re-occupied the "Audimax" at the University of Vienna!!!

Noone is Illegal Protest in front of the Polish Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine on 22 October 2010

22 жовтня о 16-00 незалежні профспілки, представники лівих рухів та організацій, антифашисти України проведуть пікетування польської амбасади (вул. Ярославів Вал, 12) під лозунгом «жодна людина не є нелегальною» з вимогами прискорити легалізацію заробітчан, що не мають офіційного статусу у Польщі. У формі театралізованого перформансу буде продемонстрована тяжкість життя заробітчанина-нелегала. У це же день у Варшаві відбудеться пікетування Сейму з тими самими вимогами, у ньому візьмуть участь також заробітчани з України, ліві та анархісти з Польщі.

Зараз у Польщі працюють нелегально від 50 до 500 тисяч робітників-іноземців, серед яких значна частина – українці. Ці люди постійно зазнають дискримінації через свою юридичну незахищеність, стають об’єктами атак поліції, мафії та неонацистів. Часто вони не мають елементарних базових умов життя.

Організатори акції вважають, що кожна людина заслуговує на гідні умови життя та праці, що категорія «нелегальний» взагалі не може вживатися стосовно людини. Капіталістична глобалізація сьогодні усуває будь-які перепони для руху капіталу, але стимулює нерівний розподіл ринку робочої сили задля отримання надприбутків. Трудящі люди різних країн стають жертвами глобального капіталу, а ідеологи ксенофобії стикають їх одне з одним.

Еміграція – це лише одна «сторона медалі» для України. Наша країна не тільки постачає робочу силу в Європу та Росію, але й імпортує її з менш заможних регіонів, переважно з країн Закавказзя, Середньої Азії, Молдови. Ці люди часто не мають легального статусу в Україні, тому зазнають тих самих проблем, що і їх брати по нещастю – українці в Польщі. При цьому в Україні свідомо нагнітається расистська істерія під прикриттям націонал-патріотичних гасел стосовно «навали нелегалів».

За прогнозами спеціалістів, до 2050 року населення України у віці 18-59 років зменшиться на 44%, а кількість пенсіонерів виросте на 27%. Прогодувати майбутніх пенсіонерів зможуть тільки офіційно працюючі робітники, від яких будуть надходити відрахування у Пенсійний фонд. «Нелегальний статус працівника, - зазначають організатори акції, - у першу чергу вигідний роботодавцю та корумпованим органам міліції. У той же час «нелегали» купують продукти у магазина і сплачують НДС, але гроші йдуть у абстрактний Держбюджет, а не на допомогу пенсіонерам, багатодітним сім’ям тощо».

Ми розуміємо, що в даний момент доля наших співвітчизників залежить від міжнародної солідарності, тому закликаємо усі прогресивні сили світу підтримати їх протест за краще життя. Один світ – одна боротьба! Акція ставить за мету також привернути увагу до “тінізації” трудових відносин в межах України - нездатності захистити права через неоформлення трудових відносин. На думку організаторів, це породжується слабкістю незалежного профспілкового руху.

Student protests against commercialization of education in Ukraine

On October 12, over 20000 Ukrainian students came to the streets to protest the decision of the government to allow public universities to introduce new burdening fees. A total of 15 cities were protesting, fromthe West to the East of the country. Major rallies were held in Kiev, Lviv, Kharkov, Uzhhorod and Simferopol. Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zhitomir, Kamyanets-Podolsk, Sumy, Khmelnitsky, Kirovograd, Lugansk, Lutsk and Sevastopol were protesting as well.

The organizers of the protests are the independent student union “DirectAction” (“Priama Diya” in Ukrainian) and the Foundation of Regional Initiatives. “Direct Action”, a left-wing syndicalist union striving forlibertarian education, has been active in defending students’ rights and interests against the pressure of university administrations, neoliberal reforms and state special services.

A year ago, “Direct Action” was instrumental in arranging protests when the previous Timoshenko government intended to pass a similar decree on additional fees for students. Then, mass student protests prevented the adoption of the controversial decree. Now, in late August, the new Azarov government passed the 796 Decree that allows administration of universities to install fees for missed classes; for use of libraries, first-aid posts, gymnasiums and Internet; for dissertation etc. The authorities are about to increase the fees for dormitories and to reduce the number of students educated for free as well, though the Ukrainian Constitution formally provides free higher education.

Contrary to the Ukrainian far right blaming some people in the government as ‘Un-Ukrainian’, independent student activists emphasize that the problem is not in personalities but in the system itself. They see the introduction of new fees as a part of the offensive of neoliberal capitalism against the social rights of people, particularly youth. They call for resisting such measures and want to extend their struggle.

In Kiev, 2000 students participated in the march to the buildings of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Administration of President demanding free education for all. Their slogans included “Liberty, Equality, Student Solidarity!”, “Knowledge not for sale!”, “Universities aren’t markets!” “Down with the ministers, down with the capitalists!”, “One solution – revolution!”, “Rebel, love, don’t give up your rights”. The banners stated “Student Solidarity”, “Down with social barriers!”, “Don’t Panic! Join us!”, “Remember 1968”, “Not for sale”, and the Orwellian-style “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength… Knowledge is Commodity?”. Near the governmental residence, activists voiced their demands to cancel the entire decree, not just its most offensive positions. They also read the solidarity greeting from the well-known Ukrainian author Serhiy Zhadan, and stressed out the international solidarity within the Global Wave of Action for Education and the endorsement of the International Student Movement. A great number of “Direct Action” papers and leaflets calling for students’ self-organization and struggle were distributed.

The youth demo in Lviv was perhaps the largest. It gathered, by various estimates, from 5000 to 7000 people. United under the motto of free education, students of Lviv marched to the building of the regional administration where they held the picket. The building was attacked by unknown people who threw smoke bombs, tomatoes and eggs. However, ultimately the meeting had a peaceful conclusion.

In the Transcarpathian city of Uzhhorod, the protest organized by the Foundation of Regional Initiatives was attended by 600 or even 1000 young people, an enormous number for the smallest of 24 regional centers of Ukraine. It was definitely the biggest demo in this city in recent years. On the square at the local regional administration

Simferopol, the capital of Crimea, was the first city to protest the controversial governmental decree, as the administration of the local university had been the first to introduce ‘paid services’ by this decree (moreover, it proposed even some own ‘inventions’ such as fees for retaking of exams). On October 4, 500 young people rallied by radical Marxists and Anarchists marched across the city to manifest their rejection of the commercialization of education. They gathered despite the university direction threatening to repress the student activists. A week later, Crimean students were joined by the rest of Ukraine, so they came out for another rally, this time a flash mob, to confirm their demands.

More than 300 university students protested against newly imposed fees in the second biggest Ukrainian city Kharkov. Despite the cool weather, some female students even took off their clothes to show that increase in cost of university education would leave a low-income student unable to continue studies ‘without selling the clothes off her back’. A similar performance was held in Rivne.

Facing the rage of the students, president Yanukovich announced that the government decree would be suspended. However, this was revealed to be a lie to calm down the revolutionary students. The campaign against commercialization of education isn’t over. The struggle continues!

Political Arrests in Belarus

For two days six detainees are under arrest in connection with the attack on the embassy of Russia. The arrests are going on...

Sept. 3 about 6 o’clock in the morning seven non-government activists were arrested by law enforcement bodies of Belarus. Six of them are held 38 hours in custody in the detention center of Minsk. The detainees were interrogated about their involvement in the pelting Molotov cocktails at the embassy of Russia in Minsk. Young people jointly rent an apartment in one district of Minsk. At 6-20 am a doorbell rang , one of the young men opened the door and law enforcement officers in civilian clothes immediately burst in the apartment.All were present at the time in the apartment were taken to GUBOP Interior Ministry for questioning, the apartment was searched, five computers, two laptops, mobile phones, money, posters and magazines were confiscated. One of the detainees had been interrogated as a witness in a criminal case of an attack on the embassy of Russia and released about 19 hours. Another six people – Bogachek Igor, Khotina Valeria, Slusar Serge, Dedok Nicholas, Zhingerovsky Alexei and Franzkevich Alexander – are still in the detention center of Minsk in the street Okrestsin. Relatives and friends are not able to contact them. The maximum period of detention without charge in Belarus is 72 hours.

Budapest Gay Pride Parade is largest Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender event in Hungary. Budapest Gay Pride Parade 2010 will mark 15th anniversary of the event with one week long cultural event in Budapest.
This year Budapest Gay Pride Festival is taking place from July 4th to July 11th 2010. The March itself is going to happen on 10 July. As usual, behind the fences and with a lot of police due to a hue number of angry neo-nazis around that 'by chance' organize some demo in another part of the city and then may gather around the place where the Pride takes place.
The Pride expects thousands of participants, both from Hungary and abroad + various groups including Antifa Hungary, Rhythms of Resistance drummers from Vienna and Berlin and the Pink Block Radical Cheer Leaders, as well as different LGBT organizations and Amnesty International Hungary.

Beograd -- Viši sud oslobodio grupu šestoro anarhista optužbe da su bacanjem Molotovljevih koktela na ambasadu Grčke izazvali opštu opasnost, jer optužba nije dokazana.

"Osnov za oslobađajuću presudu je zakonski, a ne politički. Nije dokazano da su optuženi izvršili krivično delo", rekao je sudija Dragomir Gerasimović.

Beogradska šestorka je slobodna i nevina, odlučio je sudija. Ratibor Trivunac, vođa Anarhosindikalističke inicijative, rekao je nakon presude da država nije uspela da razbije anarhistički pokret.

U kratkom obrazloženju presude, on je rekao da nema dokaza da su Ratibor Trivunac, Tadej Kurepa, Nikola Mitrović, Ivan Savić, Sanja Dojkić i Ivan Vulović izazivali opštu opasnost bacanjem tri Molotovljeva koktela na zgradu grčke ambasade prošlog avgusta.

"Moje lično uverenje je da je to posledica činjenice da bi ovaj proces izgubio na nekom višem sudu, da li u Strazburu, da li negde drugde. U svakom slučaju, nisu želeli sebi da dozvole da naprave sebi još veću štetu nekom odštetom koju bi morali da plaćaju. Oni će sada svakako svima nama morati da plate tih šest meseci što smo sedeli bez ikakvih osnova", rekao je Ratibor Trivunac.

Prvobitna optužnica teretila je takozvanu beorgadsku šestorku za međunarodni terorizam, ali je ona kasnije izmenjena. Ipak, članovi Anarhosindikalističke inicijative u pritvoru su proveli skoro pola godine.

"Suđenje je potvrdilo ono što smo već znali, da nas je ova država kidnapovala iz političkih razloga i držala nas u zatvoru šest meseci. Nas šestoro smo ukupno bili u zatvoru preko 1.000 dana", kaže Tadej Kurepa.

"Oni su nama sada pokazali 'mi možemo da vas držimo šest meseci bez ikakvih dokaza', što se videlo i na sudu, jedino što nisu smeli da urade pošto je toliko jasno da nema osnova. Nisu smeli na kraju da nas osude, ali oni su postiugli svoje - oni su nas šest meseci držali u zatvoru bez kontakta s prijateljima. Ono što nisu postigli je to da nam razbiju organizaciju", kazao je Trivunac.

Među prvim narednim koracima Anarhosindikalističke inicijative biće objavljivanje knjige u kojoj će se, prema rečima lidera pokreta Ratibora Trivunca, naći sva dokumenta sa suđenja.

Дорогие товарищи!

Пишу вкратце. Сегодня суд счел нас невиновными в связи с обвинениями, выдвинутыми прокурором. До этого обвинителю уже пришлось изменить обвинения с «международного терроризма» на «совершение общеопасных действий». Теперь все обвинения против нас сняты. Председательствующий судья кратко пояснил, что постановление «основано на законе, а не политике» (что служит косвенным признанием того, что весь процесс с самого начала был политически мотивирован, а не основан на фактах), и что нет никаких доказательств, что мы принимали участие в «оказании помощи и подстрекательстве» (товарищ Тадей и я) и в «общеопасных действиях» (товарищ Санья и товарищи Иван С., Никола и Иван В.). У прокурора есть 8 дней для обжалования решения, но, судя по реакции общественности и громкой реакции СМИ на решение, мы не ожидаем, что вышестоящий суд отклонит вердикт. Теперь наши усилия направлены на снятие с товарищей из организации ASI в Вршаче обвинений в «препятствии юстиции» в связи с тем, что они подняли плакат «Освободите арестованных анархистов», и на возвращение паспорта хорватскому анархо-синдикалистскому товарищу, задержанному в Сербии на 4 месяца. Хороватский товарищ отдан под суд с теми же обвинениями, что и против товарищей из Вршача - за то, что пронес пачку бумаги с надписью «Анархизм - не терроризм» в зал суда во время первого публичного слушания 17 февраля, когда мы были освобождены из следственного заключения после почти 6 месяцев в самых тяжелых условиях.

Solidarity Appeal from Ukraine: Stop Repression of Student Trade Union

A CALL FOR SOLIDARITY

Dear Comrades!

We are an Independent Student Union, “Priama Dija” (“Direct Action”) and we ask for your support.

The case is that for over the last six months, the union has been under unprecedented pressure. Everything started with our series of successful actions (together with other youth organizations) against the establishment of fees for previously free services in the universities, against cutting funds for scholars and against the plans to suspend scholarships for students who received even a single grade of “3”- (C). Ever since then, the intelligence services, together with the administration of the National Taras Shevchenko University of Kiev, are carrying out a whole campaign of pressure against the union's activists. All available measures are used against them, including intimidation and repression.

During this period:

1) pressure was used against the activists by threatening to sack their parents from work;

2) activists were expelled from the university;

3) intimidation and face-to-face "talks" were held with anyone who somehow helped us;

4) deterrence was made by the intelligence services.

It's worth mentioning that a number of administrators in private conversations made it absolutely clear that they were being “pressed from above”. Some clerks called it clearly “a war”. Though there are those who won't stop at anything just to keep their positions. Thus the Dean of the Faculy of Philosophy, Mr. Konverskii A.E., stated directly that he “will roll anyone who would challenge his career into the pavement”. Soon afterwords even such a little event as a film club at the faculty was abandoned without a particular reason and with no explanation.

The administration also placed itself on the record by instructing the security to prohibit the activists from entering the Red (main) corpus of the university, regardless of the legitimate right of free entry for union members.

In general, an atmosphere of total control is installed in “the best university in the country”. Any signs of dissatisfaction are rooted out immediately. Thus the very dawns of a protest against the rise in dormitory fees were brutally suppressed. The students-initiators were expelled, according to our sources.

The present state of affairs is connected to an appalling fact. The Kiev National University is virtually run by Vice-Rector Mr. Bugrov V.A., who has also been, according to our data, an SBU officer since 1989. (SBU is the Ukrainian Security Services — previously the KGB.)

Let us also mention that the former chief of the SBU, Mr. Volodymyr Nalyvaichenko, swore that he had recalled all the agents from institutions of higher education during the “deKGBzation” campaign.

The latter events and facts are a disgraceful precedent for both the University and Ukraine as a whole. The University should stand for the free development of the individual and not for the totalitarian forging of security-service agents.

We call for your solidarity!

We also ask you to send letters of solidarity to the Head of the SBU, an authorized representative for Human Rights (an Ombudsman) and to the administration of Kiev University. Sample letters are given below.

On 7 April feminists from CEU Gender studies organized a performance against the commercial (sponsored by P&G, advertisement of washing powder) exhibition “Great innovations for women” at Gödör, which relies entirely on gender stereotypes and makes false assumptions about women’s lives. The open-air exhibition at the very entrance of the club is a collection of giant things such as a vacuum cleaner, a washing machine, a bra, a lipstick, pants etc.

The statement of the performers was as follows:

This exhibition relies entirely on gender stereotypes and makes false assumptions about women’s lives by:

- Identifying the washing-machine, vacuum-cleaner, and iron as products designed to fundamentally improve women’s lives, sending the message that women are meant to function primarily in the domestic realm.

- Tagging cleaning as a female chore and perpetuating the idea that women should take on these ‘feminine’ household tasks.

- Displaying products that not all women use, like mascara, lipstick, bras, pantyhose, pantsuits, and hairdryers, further alienating those women and men who choose not to conform to the gender stereotypes associated with appearance.

- Perpetuating the gender stereotype that women should always be perfectly composed in order to earn the respect of a male-dominated society.

- Identifying the pantsuit as the most significant symbol of women’s emancipation, suggesting that women must conform to male norms in order to succeed.

- Inaccurately and disrespectfully associating this exhibition with Women’s Day and arguing that these products have emancipated women. The ongoing struggle for women’s rights has not relied on such consumer products to achieve its goals.

The performance started around 4 with an improvised washing of T-Shirts that contained different sexist statements about women, and general anti-women rights stereotypes. The girls were washing the T-Shirts one after another trying to get rid of the phrases on the T-Shirts for ever.

For this they used a special washing powder 'Feminism'.

When they ran out of the 'dirty' T-Shirts, they offered everyone who was present to write the statements about women that they believe should disappear.

Other participants of the performance were holding banners 'Cosmetics + Domestics does not equal Woman' and 'Brainwash'. They were going around Gödör with these banners and showing them to the passers by and cars and public transport passengers.The random pedestrians showed their interest in the performance, lots of them were supportive. Some tourists took pictures (as usual).

Closer to the end of the performance one far right and nationalist media man called TomCat found the action and came with his camera to film it and to ask stupid questions. He was questioning the right of women to make their choice and wear what they want and look as they want, and not what males and patriarchate society demand from them since ages. After several interviews with the participants of the performance he switched to the open air exhibition itself.

Overall, it was a good performance that attracted public attention to a place of a woman in a society.

The demo and the blockades on 11 March were successful, at least the politicians wo came to the Summit in Vienna had to admit 'Austrians have big problems with the implementation of Bologna" based on the demo and the blockades they experienced. The alternative summit and the workshops that took place on 12 and 13 March were also very informative and good for establishing a common platform of student struggle for the future.
Overall, it was a good opportunity for students from a number of European countries to gather in one place, and also to discuss burning topics related to education and student movements.

Students preparing for the “2010 Bologna Ministerial Conference“ in Vienna

Vienna (22nd February 2010) – Students are preparing for the “2010 Bologna Ministerial Conference“ in Vienna and Budapest. In addition to a variety of creative campaigns and demonstrations, students have organized an alternative summit. Guests from all over Europe have announced their participation.

Demonstration

On March 11th and 12th 2010 education ministers from 46 countries will gather for an “Extraordinary Anniversary Ministerial Conference” in Budapest and Vienna. The Bologna process has changed European universities, not only through the often catastrophic implementation of the Bachelor/Master system. The shortcomings of the Bologna Declaration and the incompetent implementation of the Action Lines cannot merit a celebration of the process. Because of this, the “unsereuni – our uni”student movement is organizing the “Bologna Action Days” from March 10th -14th 2010.

On Thursday, March 11th, an international demonstration with the slogan “United against cuts in education and social services – our future in our hands” will take place, starting at 3 PM at the Vienna Westbahnhof. A broad call for support from students organising the demonstration has reached a large number of organisations and unions.

Teaching and research staff at Vienna’s universities, for example the Technical University of Vienna, will hold staff meetings in preparation for the protests. There will be strike measures at several universities, including the University of Applied sciences, FH Campus Wien. Classes will be cancelled on March 11th and 12th.

Alternative Summit

From March 12th to 14th students are organising an Alternative Summit at the University Campus in Vienna. The program will offer a number of workshops dealing with various areas in education politics and a final panel discussion. Participants will include Christian Felber from ATTAC Austria, the journalist and author Robert Misik and the sociologist Andreas Keller from the German education trade union.

International Guests

Guests from many European countries have announced their participation at the Alternative Summit and the demonstration in Vienna. Apart from providing space for discussion of European and international consequences of the Bologna process and related developments, the alternative events taking place in Vienna between March 11th and 14th are intended as a platform for international networking and exchanging protest experiences with fellow students from all over Europe.

Bologna Burnt in Budapest

On 9 March two events related to Bologna process took place in Budapest: a workshop and a demonstration.

The worksop took place at CEU from 2-30 until 4-00. There were 22 people who attended teh workshop. It started with a speech of Dr. Liviu Matei about Bologna system and its place in higher education, as well as some implications of this system and the need for it. Further, some statistical data were presented by Freddie followed by a discussion about the Bologna system and its positive and negative sides. Afterward, one of the organizers of the Bologna Burns from Vienna told about the preparations in Vienna for the actions and about the autumn occupations of the universities.

At 6 p.m. we moved to Astoria where the demo was to take place. There were around 30 people at the demo. We were holding 3 transparencies:

Although it was pretty cold outside, we managed to stay there around one hour. Despite the fact it was not that umerous, we strongly believe that it was a good start for raising consciousness of students in Hungary and a contribution to internetional students' movement.

Morze Infoshop is pleased to invite you to a workshop on Bologna process on the 9th of March at Central European University. It has been ten years since the Bologna education process was introduced into the European universities and it is still controversial. On March 11 and 12 2010 the education ministers of 46 European countries will celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the Bologna process in Budapest and Vienna accordingly. Considering the current situation and the ongoing protests in many European Universities this celebration is a mockery for all of us. We believe that there is nothing to celebrate.

Student occupations started in Vienna in autumn 2009 and this flame of blockades spread all around the world. The main reasons were protesting against commercialization of education and criticizing the system which produces workforce dictated by the capitalist market. Students in Vienna are planning to have protests and the counter summit on 11th-14th March (http://bolognaburns.org).

Budapest joins the Austrian colleagues and would like to attract attention to the issue of Bologna system and its implementation in Hungary.

The program of the 9th of March looks as follows:

A discussion on the Bologna Process, the massive student protest planned in Vienna on the 11th-4th, and its relationship with the broader student movement. The discussion leaders include members of the Vienna Student Movement "Bologna Burns", a keynote speaker Dr. Liviu Matei from the Department of Public Policy at CEU, and students with first-hand experience in student occupations. There will also be information about travel to Vienna on the 11th for the counter-summit and the blockade of the Bologna summit.

Directly following the discussion, all are invited to participate in a demonstration in front of ELTE Campus in Astoria against the 10^th anniversary celebration of Bologna system.

Protest in Zagreb

Zagreb police have detained 23 activists who protested against a construction project to turn an old downtown street into a posh housing and shopping area.
The Right to a City and Green Action groups say the activists were taken to a police station in an early morning raid Thursday.
Police spokeswoman Aleksandra Ljuba says the protesters were detained because they resisted police action to remove huge containers they placed illegally on a downtown street.
The protesters, who claim that a construction will ruin the historical center of Zagreb, placed the containers earlier this week, preventing further construction work. They also held a protest rally Wednesday, joined by more than 1,000 Zagreb residents.

Celebrating Bologna? We don't think so.

International call for participation

On March 11 and 12 2010 the education ministers of 46 European countries will celebrate the 10-years anniversary of the Bologna-process in Vienna and Budapest.
Considering the current situation and the ongoing protests in many European Universities this celebration is a mockery for all of us.

Not only has the Bologna-process clearly failed to achieve the agreed goals of improved mobility; it also led to more restrictions for students and their studies and to greater social selection of access to higher education in general.

The fact that the entire process is based on the understanding of education as only producing workforce dictated by the market is reflected in the agreed goals. Therefore our aim is not only to measure success or failure of the Bologna-process but furthermore to question the process and its foundations itself. Master and PhD as elite programs, which especially exclude women, introduction of study fees and under-financing of universities as well as de-democratization within the university system are obvious symptoms.
The difficult financial situation increases the corporate influence on education and scientific research. The orientation of teaching towards corporate interests does not only affect universities, but the entire education sector in general. Hence the possibilities of self-determined and critical learning are restricted.

In view of this disastrous situation we don't see any reason to celebrate the Bologna-process. The European-wide protests of students, teachers and others show that the economization of education is directed against their interests.

Therefore the week from 8 to 12 March 2010 shall accompany this conference with demonstrations, strikes and blockades as well as an alternative summit, where we are going to discuss European education policy, as well as the common goals of our protests.

There will be an antifa demo against the Day of Honor in Budapest on 13 February. We start at 4p.m. from HERE. We will just walk to the place where a bigger static demonstration by some NGOs who use antifa rather as populism will be held.

Everywhere we are faced with resurgence of the fascism, sometimes it comes without disguise, while in other cases it is incorporated in the agenda of mainstream politics. As anarchists we understand that fascism is a defense mechanism of the state and capital to secure their survival. In the time of one of the capitalism's inherent crisis, we already see this happening. We feel obliged to take part in the antifascist struggle, yet we also understand it as a necessary part of the struggle against the capitalism. We have no sympathies for the liberal lamentations on racism and exclusion, whose only political mission is the reaffirmation of foundations of the future exploitation and discrimination.

We are participating in a broad antifascist fronts, yet we fully understand the danger of recuperation of antifascism by the political parties and NGOs, known enemies of the oppressed. We are the part of antifascist struggle pushing for the adoption and implementation of direct democratic methods of decision making, as well as direct action as a method of struggle, within the broader antifascist movement.

Antifascist struggle, inherently tied with struggle against all the other sorts of social oppression and exploitation, is of outmost importance. The fight against fascism will have no future if it is not closely tied to the struggles of workers, migrants, students for dignity and liberation. To change something we need to change everything.

Vitán felül áll, hogy jelenleg mindehol a fasiszta eszmék újjáéledésével kell szembenéznünk és megküzdenünk; gyakran azok teljesen nyílt és egyértelmű formájával. Más esetekben a fasizmus álruhát ölt, ami önmagában nem meglepő, mivel sok vonatkozásában kapcsolódik és áttételeket képez a fősodrú politikával.

Cпустя месяц после протестов в Копенгагене беларуские спецслужбы по запросу интерпола начали проводить «личные» беседы с людьми, задержанными в Дании во время саммита по вопросам изменения климата.

Многим людям, читающим индимедию или просто интересующимся происходящим в мире, вполне известно то, что в декабре произошло в Копенгагене. Новости большинства медийных компаний (даже корпоративных) пестрили заголовками о неимоверных нарушениях мусорами прав человека на улицах датской столицы во время протестов.
Для нас это давно уже не секрет, что власти в случаях опасности могут поджимать так называемые гражданские свободы ради сохранения своего статуса. В Копенгагене «демократическая» машина запада показала, на что она способна (подобное происходит так же очень часто в США и прочих странах, однако не придается такой огласке из-за значительно меньших масштабов происходящего)

Все бы так и прошло, и люди продолжили бы верить в демократию, а те кто протестовал продолжили бы свое сопротивление властям, если бы не один факт: во время ареста, многих задержанных фотографировали и собирали о них данные — в целом это неудивительно, каждый раз когда вас задерживают, мусора стараются собрать как можно больше информации о вас — для того, чтобы в дальнейшем отправить запрос в интерпол. Интерпол, продолжив расследование, передал запросы спецслужбам стран, из которых приехали задержанные. Так у некоторых задержанных из Украины местные спецслужбы начали проверять бумаги, поданные в консульство на визу, приглашать на «личные» беседы для расспроса о причинах поездки.

Беларуских граждан желание интерпола докопаться до правды то же не обошло стороной. По запросу наши «доблестные» КГБшники начали рыться в жизнях задержанных в Копенгагене людей с той же рьяностью как и украинские спецслужбы. Со времени протестов еще не прошло и месяца, как некоторых из задержанных граждан беларуси начали приглашать в КГБ для все тех же «личных» бесед.

В конце концов деньги нашим спецслужбам отрабатывать надо как-то, даже выполняя запросы европейских агенств.

Human Rights continue to be violated in Serbia, the country that strives to become a part of the EU. With current state policies fueled by money of mafia the European perspective of Serbia is unacceptable.

On Saturday, September 4, 2009, five* political activists were arrested in Belgrade on trumped up charges. The five, Tadej Kurepa, Ivan Vulović, Sanja Dojkić, Ratibor Trivunac, and Nikola Mitrović, are activists in or associates of the Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative (ASI), the Serbian section of the International Workers’ Association (IWA). (*The sixth person sought by police, Ivan Savić, was also arrested some days later.)
The arrests are allegedly related to a direct action which took place at the Greek Embassy on August 25. Negligible damage was done: a crack in one window, a tiny burn mark on the facade and a circled A graffiti on the embassy as a act of symbolic solidarity with Thodoros Iliopoulos. The prosecutor however imagines this as an act of “international terrorism” and would like to charge our comrades with such. If the state allows such charges to be pressed, they could be facing 3-15 years in prison.

Members of ASI have clearly and publicly declared that they knew nothing of the action, which was claimed by a group nobody has heard of, Crni Ilja. It is not the first time that authorities have come after activists for no other reason than the fact that they are radical critics of the state. Powerful stakeholders are involved, and ASI activists were on their way, therefore they were silenced and put in prison.

The activist were in prison for several month without being informed about any charges, but in November they were accused in „international terrorism” and the trial took place. ON DECEMBER 7, THE COURT DECIDED TO HOLD THE 6 IN CUSTODY UNTIL THEIR TRIAL. THIS IS EXPECTED TO TAKE PLACE IN SPRING AT THE EARLIEST.

Now solidarity and media attention to this case is highly needed, as the activists are facing serious accusation without proof of their fault. XXIV конгресс Международной ассоциации трудящихся

С 4 по 6 декабря 2009 г. в Порту-Алегри (Бразилия) проходил 24-й конгресс анархо-синдикалистского Интернационала – Международной ассоциации трудящихся (МАТ). Интернациональное объединение анархистских профсоюзов было воссоздано в 1922 г. как продолжение антиавторитарного, федералистского крыла Первого Интернационала. Впервые за всю историю МАТ ее съезд состоялся на Американском континенте.

Конгресс заседал в помещении театра «Компания де арти» в историческом центре столицы бразильского штата Риу-Гранди-ду-Сул, раскинувшейся на берегу озера Гуаиба. В работе форума приняли участие делегации от большинства секций Интернационала: Аргентинской региональной рабочей федерации (FORA), Бразильской рабочей конфедерации (COB), британской Федерации солидарности (SF), Национальной конфедерации труда Испании (CNT), Итальянского синдикального союза (USI), Норвежской синдикалистской федерации (NSF), Португальской секции МАТ (AIT-SP), российской Конфедерации революционных анархо-синдикалистов (КРАС), словацкого «Прямого действия» (PA), сербской Анархо-синдикалистской инициативы (АСИ), Национальной конфедерации труда Франции (CNT-AIT), а также наблюдатели от Союза польских синдикалистов (ZSP). Две секции МАТ – Свободный рабочий союз Германии (FAU) и чешская секция – прислали свои решения в письменной форме. В ходе конгресса ZSP был официально принят в состав МАТ в качестве ее секции в Польше. Были получены приветствия от анархо-синдикалистских организаций Перу, США, Австралии и Чили.

Представители анархо-синдикалистских организаций мира встретились в трудный для Интернационала момент. В сентябре 2009 г. секретарь МАТ Ратибор Тривунац был арестован в Белграде вместе с 5 другими активистами АСИ и сербскими анархистами. Им попытались приписать швыряние двух бутылок с зажигательной смесью в здание греческого посольства в Сербии – инцидент, который вызвал чисто символический, минимальный ущерб. Хотя арестованные товарищи категорически отрицают свою причастность к делу, и никаких реальных доказательств их участия нет, судебные власти Сербии обвинили анархистов ни много, ни мало в «международном терроризме», и теперь анархо-синдикалистам и анархистам грозит до 15 лет тюрьмы!

Кроме того, арест секретаря Интернационала на время парализовал международную работу и угрожал поставить под вопрос само проведение конгресса. Пришлось принять срочные меры и избрать специальную комиссию, которая вместе с временным секретариатом и бразильскими товарищами завершила подготовку к форуму в Порту-Алегри.

Неудивительно, что вопрос о «Белградской шестерке» стал одной из основных тем, обсуждавшихся на конгрессе. Делегация АСИ представила подробный доклад о ситуации и перспективах ее развития, после чего состоялась подробная дискуссия. Выступавшие делегаты отмечали, что нынешние репрессии касаются не только сербских товарищей. Дело не только в том, что сфабриковано дело, которое призвано разгромить одну из секций Интернационала. Власти Сербии опробуют сценарий, который может быть в будущем применен против любого социального протеста, любого сопротивления, любой оппозиции. В этом отношении белградское дело имеет характер модели и сопоставимо по значимости с делом Сакко и Ванцетти. Поэтому крайне необходимо развернуть широкую международную кампанию солидарности с арестованными, привлечь международную научную и культурную общественность, правозащитные организации, собирать по всему миру подписи под петициями протеста, пригласить юристов из-за рубежа, направить делегацию на процесс, который намечен на весну. Но самое главное – нужно обязательно координировать выступления и акции протеста в разных странах. Эту работу будет выполнять Секретариат Интернационала. Одновременно решено создать Комиссию помощи заключенным.

Другой темой на конгрессе был нынешний капиталистический кризис с его социальными последствиями. Секции МАТ активно участвуют в борьбе против закрытия предприятий, безработицы, ухудшения условий работы, прекаризации и заемного труда. Делегаты поддержали проведение международных анархо-синдикалистских кампаний. Так, в течение двух последних недель апреля 2010 г. и 1 мая будут организованы скоординированные выступления против заёмного труда. В те же недели следующего, 2011 г. планируется проведение международных анархо-синдикалистских дней борьбы против границ и за солидарность с трудящимися-мигрантами. Решено координировать действия секций в борьбе против ТНК, прекаризации и сезонной занятости, а также укрепить контакты между членами секций различных стран, которые заняты в одной и той же отрасли экономики. Обсуждалась возможность организации символической интернациональной антивоенной стачки. Отмечалась необходимость активного распространения анархо-синдикалистских идей и практики в мире (в качестве одного из регионов, где необходимо организовать подобную работу, был назван Китай).

Делегаты конгресса отклонили предложения об изменении принципов голосования в МАТ и приёма в Интернационал. Анархо-синдикалисты исходят из федералистского принципа «одна секция – один голос» и отвергают принцип представительной демократии, который дал бы преимущество более крупным секциям. Подтверждена антипартийная позиция МАТ: члены партий не могут занимать ответственные посты в Интернационале.

Острым вопросом для некоторых секций является наличие в их странах раскольнических группировок, которые пытаются узурпировать их название или, не имея на то никаких оснований, претендовать на место в Интернационале. В этой связи о поддержке попросил итальянский USI, против которого ведет кампанию отколовшаяся группировка «USI – Рим». Аналогичные проблемы существуют во Франции. Делегация КРАС выразила полную солидарность с итальянскими товарищами в этом вопросе, объяснив, что недавно российская секция столкнулась с подобным фактом враждебных действий со стороны маленькой группы, исключенной из ее рядов за антисиндикализм и этницизм (форму национализма). Конгресс МАТ выразил поддержку секциям, которые оказались в такой ситуации, и тем самым подтвердил их безоговорочное признание.

Решено организовать международный летний лагерь МАТ в 2010 г. в Хорватии.

МАТ выразила поддержку развитию анархо-синдикализма в Латинской Америке. COB (Бразильская рабочая конфедерация), которая наряду с конгрессом организовала различные лекции, дискуссии и культурные мероприятия, пояснила, что положение трудящихся в Бразилии очень тяжелое, и репрессии оказывают
неблагоприятное влияние на независимое рабочее и анархистское
движения. МАТ также решила оказать финансовую поддержку библиотеке и образовательным центрам, которые откроет СОВ.

Параллельно с конгрессом состоялись семинар "Свободный синдикализм в Америке" и общенациональная встреча бразильской COB, на которой присутствовали делегаты от Рабочих федераций Риу-Гранди-ду-Сул и Сан-Паулу, а также групп из Санта-Катарина, Баия и Сержипи; собравшиеся отдали дань памяти прославленному анархо-синдикалисту, историку Эдгару Родригешу, который скончался в мае 2009 года.

В рамках конгресса товарищи из бразильской COB продемонстрировали организованную ими выставку. посвященную истории и современности анархо-синдикалистского движения в Бразилии, либертарного образования и коллективизации в Испанской революции. Ну и, конечно, очень важным и интересным для КРАС был обмен мнениями с участниками других делегаций, с активистами из Бразилии и Аргентины.

Следующий конгресс анархо-синдикалистских профсоюзов намечено провести в 2013 г. в Испании. Функции Секретариата до этих пор решено возложить на норвежскую секцию - NSF.

В целом, несмотря на некоторые трудности технического характера, 24-й конгресс МАТ можно признать успешным. Следует надеяться, что он будет способствовать развитию и распространению мирового анархо-синдикалистского движения.

COP 15 Demonstrations: 1st Day

12 December 2009. Police broke the demonstration against the COP 15 in Copenhagen with riot vans during the protest. Almost 400 people were blocked inside the trap. Police forced the people to sit down in the middle of the street. Then they were taken away handcuffed and put on to buses.
Today is the first day of mass demonstration in Copenhagen against COP 15 summit that reached its middle. Although the demonstration was peaceful, still, hundreds of people (700-900) were arrested in Copenhagen today after some of the demonstrators threw bricks in police. Several activists from Budapest who went to Copenhagen to participate in the demonstration were arrested today, but they are already released.

Antifa Demo in Budapest

The demonstration against murder of Ivan Khutorskoy and neo-nazi movement in Russia started around 4p.m. and lasted for more than one hour. Ca. 30 participatns, mostly red skinheads (a stream of skinhead movement that celarly opposes any racism and nacism and follows clear antifa goals) and antifa activists, gathered in front of the Russian embassy in Andrassy St. in Budapest. It is worth mentioning that this location is rather close to Heroes' sq. - one of the favourite places of Hungarian neo-nazi gathering.

Some participatns of the demo put the portrait of Ivan and an article about him on the fence of the embassy. A bigger portrait of Ivan surrounded by candles and flowers was put on the floor in front of the fence. The participanss gathered around the portrait and commemorated the memory of the murdered antifa activist who was one of the leaders of Russian red skinheads.

The participatns were holding banners "Szolidaritás az orosz antifasisztákkal" ("Solidarity with Russian Antifascists"), "Skins gegen (against) nazis", one antifascist flag and one anarchy flag. After a while, the participants brought the transparency in Russian "How many more people need to die? Enough!"

Everyone was standing in front of the Russian embassy fence, and there was also police, but there was more police than as if it were for a small demo of 30 people, as there was a threat of a possible attac by Hungarian neo-nazis that were indeed circulating around the embassy watching the antifa demo and making their evil plans. Unfortunately, this is the bitter reality that the right for assembly (peaceful demonstration) needs to be protected by police in Hungary.

The passers by were generally interested, and some even stopped to ask what was going on.
This demonstration was an important step to raise awareness of people in Budapest about neo-fascism threat and movement in Russia, as well as to express solidarity with Russian antifa activists.

At 16-00 on 5 December 2009 a solidarity demonstration that commemorates Ivan Khutorskyy will take place in front of the R u s s i a n embassy in Budapest. Ivan Khutorsky was a Russian antifa activist (one of the red skins leaders) that was murdered by Russian neo-nazi on 16 November.

On 30 November a group of activists appeared in the park near Petöfi bridge in order to protest against commercialization of education. The location was not chosen randomly, as this park is on a way of students from tram 4 and 6 stop to ELTE.
At 8 the action began as two activists took the transparency with the words 'Education is not for sale' in English and Hungarian of it. They were standing just in the middle of the road from the tram stop to the university so that all the students and teachers who were going to the university could see the transparency. As the studies start at 8-15 a.m. and 8-30 a. m. accordingly, around 400 students and teaching stuff saw the transparency.
Most of the students were in a hurry, but some stopped on their way to ask for the reasons of this small action. There were also several professors that got interested in this action as they had negative attitude towards commercialization of education, as well as implementation of Bologna system in Hungary. The most interesting experience was the question by one of the professors about the reason of the action: "Who wants to buy the university?"
Overall, it was a successful action and hopefully it made students think about the system of education and their place in it. Moreover, if there is such an action, this means that not everyone is satisfied with the current state of arts in higher education system in Hungary, but not many people can do anything about it, or even express their concerns openly to the public. Hopefully, this situation will change in the future, and Hungarian students will start learning how to fight for their rights.

The Workshop "On a way to BREAD and CIRCUSES. Crisis Edition" takes place from the 4th of December 2009 until the 6th of December 2009 in Tűzraktér, Budapest. It is organized by Art Sector Foundation, Budapest within crisis_mania project about alternative ways of living during crisis.
With the support of Embassy of Czech Republic and Czech Center in Budapest.

The system is experiencing its crisis that is affecting each and everyone nowadays. At such times people will start thinking about satisfying their basic needs like finding food and ensuring they have a place to live. In order to find food, people need to move, change their locations, they NEED TO TRAVEL. Usually, the people need to travel within their cities or towns.
After people find food (BREAD), they will need CIRCUSES, and for that they will need to travel outside their cities or towns. The reasons for traveling outside the cities/towns can be, of course, various, and it can be disputed whether traveling is a basic need of human being or a luxury.
The fact is, that during crisis people tend to travel less, just because they think it is too expensive.

This workshop will discuss alternative ways of TRAVELING inside and outside cities/towns, we will discover how TRAVELING can exist outside the rules of the current system, and which practices are the best. We will emphasize eco-friendly nature of alternative ways of TRAVELING, as well as compare the situation in Hungary, Slovakia and Czech Republic with regards to TRAVELING.

The topics covered by this workshop are:

Buy Nothing Day

On November 25 around 30 activists celebrated 'Buy Nothing Day' in Budapest. 'Buy Nothing Day' is an international day of anticnsumerism that is celebrated all around the world. On this day activists and supporters express their protest against capitalist world and in particular it's consumerism oriented approach. Moreover, people are encouraged to 'unshop' and 'unspend' the money on such a day.

The selection of 27-28 November is not random as these are one of the busiest shopping days in the entire year in the consumerism heaven of the US and Canada. As this day is usually celebrated on a Friday after American Thanksgiving in North America and the following day internationally, in 2009 the dates are November 27 and 28 respectively. This day was founded by Vancouver artist Ted Dave and subsequently promoted by Adbusters magazine, based in Canada.

Modern capitalist world encourages people to buy in different ways, starting from fashion shows and TV advertisement to success in the society due to the success in buying more and better things. The wwhole capitalist machine works in a way that the things people buy are not good enough or are simply out of fashin in a very short period of time, so that people need to throw them away creating additional piles of garbage and polluting the planet, and buying new and more trendy things that will be thrown away soon too. Therefore, it is important for public to show it's disagreement with the current system that fuels the fire of consumerism and also overconsumption.

In Budapest the celebration was held at TESCO in Fogarasi ut close to Pillango u. metro station. The action started at 22-00 and lasted for 20 minutes. First, the people with empty shopping carts were going around TESCO and afterwards everyone made a long line at the same cash desk with these empty shopping carts. As there were 30 people, it was quite a long line. Other people who came to buy things at TESCO, security and shop assistants were a bit surprised and they did not show great interest, but their attitude was al least neutral. At the cash desk the participants of the 'empty shopping cart race' gave the information about this action to the cashier and left.
It was a good action to attract public attention, but next time it should be even more numerous and rather on the weekend so that more people become aware of the pitfalls of consumerism.

Student Solidarity Demonstration in Kyiv

On 17 November students of Kyiv celebrated their professional holiday with a protest action “Student’s Day. Break the Wall”. They were protesting against the repressive education system and expressing their solidarity with students in Austria and Germany that occupied more than 70 universities.

In front of the main Red Building of Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv an independent student union "Direct Action" made a performance symbolizing overthrow of the existing education system.

While Pink Floyd music (‘We don’t need no education…”) was playing, the students went behind a screen with the words "education system" on it and came out in similar robot masks. A few minutes later smoke went out from the screen followed by some small explosions. After this symbolic wall representing repressive education fell down and two dozen students took off the masks and displayed a banner with the words "Student Solidarity”.

The Union activists believe that modern education brings to students stereotyped thinking, conformism and competition spirit among the students. Instead, free education should bring mutual solidarity and ability to question things.

The participants of the demo stated: "While in Ukraine the Bologna system is being introduced only now, students and teachers in Europe have already started with her uncompromising struggle. In Austria and Germany more than 70 universities are occupied, and today there are demonstrations with hundred thousand participants in these countries. Also pupils in Greece started school occupation out of solidarity." In solidarity with European colleagues, the students were holding banners that were aimed to support calls for protests in Austria, Germany and Greece.

"Direct Action" activists also reminded that the International Students' Day is celebrated in order to commemorate the murder of five students and teachers who came to protest in Prague and were killed by Nazis. "In a situation of total absence of any rights the students have nothing to celebrate!" the participants emphasized that in a situation of total absence of any rights the students have nothing to celebrate. In their view, the Students' Day in Ukraine should gain its initial meaning as the students’ rights day.

Solidarity Demosntartion

On November 17 a group of 10 activists and students came to the Austrian embassy to express their support to and solidarity with Austrian students and squatters.
The demonstration started at 10-20 a.m. after majority of people gathered on the opposite side of the street.

First, we tried to ring the bell of the embassy, so that someone will go outside and take the support letters addressed at the Austrian ambassador in Hungary. Unfortunately, these tries had no result, as nobody came out. Then we started the demonstration itself. We wanted to put the transparencies and banners on the windows of the embassy, but as the embassy building belongs to Austria, and not Hungary, we could not do that. Instead, we were just holding the transparencies and standing in front of embassy.

At 10-35 the official part started. I held a speech about the reasons for us to gather in the morning in front of the Austrian embassy instead of doing other things.

Two major reasons were the following:
- Solidarity with Austrian students who occupied the universities to protest against fees increase and discrimination. The date, 17 November, was chosen due to the fact that 9-18 November are the Global Week of Action "Education is not for Sale". During this week a number of solidarity actions, demonstrations and blockades of the universities were taking place all around the world, from US to Bangladesh.
- Solidarity with squatters from Vienna who were evicted on 12 October from the newly squatted building in Vienna that was supposed to become a new social center.

During the speech some people were going out and in the embassy, and we were asking them to take the letters to the ambassador. At last one person agreed to call some official representative who could take the letters. At the very end of the speech, the door opened and two people went out. The person who was an official representative was friendly, and listened to the reasons for us being there with interest. Then he took the letters and promised to give them to the ambassador.

After this each of us expressed our reasons of being present at the demonstration. The major reason was, apparently, solidarity with Austrian students and squatters. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to leave the transparencies at the embassy or on the trees in front of it. Therefore we took them with us and brought to the university of Fine Arts where an informal lecture on student occupations and demonstrations is planned on 18 November - the last day of the action week.

Stencil Workshop

US Chamber Shuts off TheYesMen.org and Websites of Hundreds of Other Activist Groups

Hundreds of activist organizations had their internet service turned off last night after the US Chamber of Commerce strong-armed an upstream provider, Hurricane Electric, to pull the plug on The Yes Men and May First / People Link, a 400-member-strong organization with a strong commitment to protecting free speech.

"This is a blow against free speech, and it demostrates in gory detail the full hypocrisy of the Chamber," said Andy Bichlbaum of The Yes Men. "The only freedom they care about is the economic freedom of large corporations to operate free of the hassles of science, reality, and democracy."

After suffering embarrassment at the hands of the Yes Men on Monday, the Chamber immediately threatened legal action, then followed through Thursday by sending a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notice to Hurricane Electric Internet Services. In the DMCA notice, the Chamber claimed that the parody Chamber website operated by The Yes Men constituted copyright infringement, and demanded that the site be shut down immediately and that the creator's service be canceled.

But the Yes Men are not served directly by Hurricane Electric, but by May First / People Link. And when Hurricane Electric shut down the fake Chamber of Commerce site (now relocated), they also took down the websites of 400 other organizations.

May First / People Link fought back. They immediately "mirrored" the site, and then quickly negotiated with Hurricane Electric to restore service to their other members.

"The DMCA attacks the critically important right we have to effectively comment and criticize institutions and companies," said May First/People Link Co-Director Alfredo Lopez. "It's an undemocratic, backwards law, a perfect example of how the government shouldn't intrude on our lives. But the Chamber was perfectly happy to use it to stomp on the Yes Men's rights to free spech, and the rights of hundreds of other organizations to operate on the web."

The 400 May First / People Link members weren't the only victims of the Chamber's action on Thursday. Today is the start of the national release of the Yes Men's new film, The Yes Men Fix the World. The film is being released in a number of independent theaters - who, not being part of a chain, are heavily dependent on the Yes Men website for selling tickets to the film. The Chamber's actions thus impinge on the ability of these small businesses to turn a profit.

"The Chamber claims to represent 3 million businesses of every size, yet their actions undermined a fair number of small businesses," said Mike Bonanno of the Yes Men. "The Chamber is clearly much less interested in actual freedom, economic or otherwise, than in the license of their largest members to operate free from the scientific consensus." (The Chamber has opposed or refused to endorse a climate bill, the absurdity of which the Yes Men's Monday action was designed to highlight.)

This isn't the first time a Yes Men site has found itself targeted by a DMCA complaint brought by a large corporation. The Yes Men have in the past received DMCA notices from Exxon, Dow Chemical, DeBeers, and the New York Times. In each case, the the Yes Men (represented by the Electronic Frontier Foundation) refused to comply, and prevailed. Even the George W. Bush campaign sent a complaint to try to interrupt service to GWBush.com, in 2000, resulting in extensive ridicule that culminated in Bush's mind-boggling gaffe that "There ought to be limits to freedom."
